News16th Annual Community Jazz Festival set for February 3-6Students, local musicians and noted guest performers will come together February 3-6 for the District 112 Annual Community Jazz Festival. This anticipated community event offers music lovers some hot music on a cold night. Featured guest performers are Mike Nelson, trombone, and Kenni Holmen, saxophone. Both of these nationally known musicians will double as clinicians for the events and activities. On Friday, February 5, the event kicks off with two dynamic concerts for all 700+ fifth graders and several middle school and high school students, featuring favorite tunes of the Swing Era. The Festival continues throughout Friday and Saturday with brass and woodwind workshops for middle school and high school students, as well as improvisation clinics and performances by all of the District's jazz ensembles. Friday night (February 5) will bring "Combo Night" to the School of the Wise II in Chanhassen. Jazz combos from Chaska and Chanhassen High Schools, as well as members of the Valley Jazz Big Band, will perform along side Holmen and Nelson between 6-8:00 p.m. The highlight of the weekend will be the Jazz Festival Finale Concert on Saturday, February 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Chanhassen High School. The concert will feature student ensembles from each middle school and both high schools. The Valley Jazz Big Band, a powerhouse of local talent, will perform as well.
